According to a recent poll, the Tokyo population is divided over the 2021 hosting of the postponed Olympics due to the coronavirus epidemic.
51.7 percent of those surveyed said the Games and the subsequent Paralympics should be canceled or postponed, according to a survey of about a thousand people published in Tokyo’s Simbun newspaper. 46.3 percent of respondents are against next year’s settlement.
According to the research, 27.7 percent of the residents of the Japanese capital would not want the Olympics to be permanently canceled, and 24 percent were in favor of another date change. About a third of respondents (31.1 percent) opposed games being played in a simplified form, such as without spectators.
Only 15.2 percent of the approximately 1,000 respondents representing Tokyo said they would hold the Olympics as planned.
Japan and the International Olympic Committee decided at the end of March, after lengthy negotiations, to postpone the Tokyo Five-Ring Games for a year due to the pandemic. The new date of the event is July 23-August 8, 2021. The organizers intend to plan the event with the maximum health of the participants - athletes, coaches, sports leaders, supporters, contributors - and significantly reduce costs.
