Regardless of the result of Sunday's match, the Hungarian national ice hockey team advanced to the world elite from the Division I/A World Championship in Ljubljana.
In the only Saturday meeting of the tournament, Lithuania defeated Romania 5-4, so it was decided that the Hungarian team will be able to play among the best next year, alongside the host Slovenia.
The Hungarian national team was able to gain promotion twice before, in 2008 in Szapporo and in 2015 in Krakow.
The Romanian team, consisting of 11 Szeklers and six naturalized players, was in an interesting situation: if they lose in regular time, they are eliminated, if they win, they even have a chance of promotion. One of the linesmen of the match was Kis-Király Barna.
In the 4th minute, Yevgeny Skachskov fired a shot into the upper right corner after a nice puck rotation and passing game. With the Lithuanian man advantage, Tamás Rzegh stole a puck and increased the difference with the help of the upper iron at the end of a trick.
The Lithuanian squad, which was threatened with relegation, increased the tempo, and Eimantas Noreika made it even better after a rough defensive error. Two and a half minutes later, with a man advantage, Jaunius Jasinevicius equalized, his long-range shot bounced off the crossbar. The Romanian team did not break, Zsombor Molnár scored from a free kick. Ugnius Cizas ended the chaos in front of the goal before the break with a goal.
At the beginning of the third innings, the most powerful Lithuanian, Emilijus Krakauskas, came out and made no mistakes, and soon Paulius Gintautas did the same. The team that was at a disadvantage mobilized its last reserves, Szilárd Rokaly adjusted the score to 5-4. There were no more hits in the round, so with the defeat, the Romanian national team was eliminated, and next year it will be in division I/B.
