According to unanimous US press coverage, the Feb. 24 will feature a public farewell to legendary basketball player Kobe Bryant, who died on January 26 at the Staples Center, home of the Los Angeles Lakers.
CNN news television cited an anonymous source close to the Bryant family at the time of the news announcement, adding that the date was allegedly chosen because of a jersey number 24 in Lakers legend.
Among others, a helicopter carrying Kobe Bryant and one of his daughters crashed near Los Angeles in late January. Nine were aboard, the pilot and eight passengers, no one surviving the tragedy. Bryant, who died at the age of 41, won gold medals at the 2008, Beijing and 2012 London Olympics, and was a five-time champion in the North American Basketball League (NBA), twice as a finalist and once as the best of the regular season.
