Public demonstrations of the Olympic torch have been suspended

In Japan, the public display of the torches of the Tokyo Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics will be suspended for the time being due to a sharp increase in the number of coronavirus cases, the insidethegames.biz portal reported.

The suspension of the demonstration series was announced after Prime Minister Suga Josihide declared a state of emergency in Tokyo, as well as in three surrounding provinces, Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba, in the wake of another wave of the pandemic.

The two torches were first issued on November 3, after both have been rested since the spring due to the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics from 2020 to 2021. During the originally planned eight-month tour, visitors will be able to see the Olympic relics in 62 locations in Japan, which will be taken to designated stations after the current state of emergency is lifted.

The Olympics, which were relocated this March last summer, run from July 23 to August 8, followed by the Paralympics from August 24 to September 5. The Olympic torch relay itself will start on March 25 in Fukushima prefecture, its journey will take 121 days, the flame will be carried through all 47 prefectures of the country. The Paralympic Torch Run will begin on August 12th.
