Mountain biker is preparing for Barbara Benkó's second Olympics

Barbara Benkó, a mountain biker, reckons that after she has won the quota, she can start at the Tokyo Olympics.

The 31-year-old cyclist explained his situation to MTI: the scoring was frozen in the leaderboard from March 3 last year - in which Hungary is currently the 19th quota winner - and two more World Cup competitions will count towards the qualification.

“We have a fixed quota if we don’t score, even then,” Benkó emphasized at the 2012 London Games.

However, who will represent the Hungarian colors in the Japanese capital after the official quota will be decided in a selection competition between him and the Hungarian champion in mountain biking, Vas Kata Blanka, U23 silver medalist, who excels in three disciplines.

"I believe we have to match who goes, but I got the quota," Barbara Benkó said. He expects to decide which one of them can travel to Tokyo by the end of May in one or two major international competitions, but he does not yet know which match will be the last among the qualifiers, which will include the 2019 and 2020 Hungarian championships. The former was won by him and the latter by Vas.

According to Benkó, whoever will be in good shape during the year does not care which race decides. He explained that injuries and illnesses have been avoided so far, he has prepared well for winter as his partner lives in the Republic of South Africa, so he trained there from November to the end of January.

Men are ranked 20th in the ranking of nations, with the top 21 finishers receiving a quota. In case of fighting for the right to participate, András Parti may be a five-ring participant for the fourth time after the Beijing, London and Rio Olympics.
