World champion Max Verstappen, the Dutch Red Bull driver, won the Formula 1 Mexican Grand Prix on Sunday in Mexico City.
This is the 14th race victory of the 25-year-old Verstappen this year - and the 34th of his career, with which he broke the record of the legendary seven-time World Cup winner Michael Schumacher in 2004 and the record of the four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel in 2013, since they had three since last Sunday. who won 13 races within one season.
Behind Verstappen, the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, the British driver of Mercedes, finished second, while the home favorite Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) was third.
The Dutch two-time world champion got off to a great start, he certainly kept his leading position in the long straight, while behind him first Lewis Hamilton and then Sergio Pérez were able to overtake George Russell, who started from second place. The two Ferraris battled with each other and in the end Carlos Sainz was able to keep Charles Leclerc behind him.
In the continuation, the leaders circled calmly, Verstappen led by one and a half seconds ahead of Hamilton and three ahead of Pérez, and the difference between them did not really change during the laps. At the same time, the two Red Bulls and the two Mercedes were clearly faster and distanced themselves from the Ferraris, so after the first ten laps it seemed clear that the race victory would be decided between them.
The pace was almost the same between the first four cars, but while Verstappen and Pérez were driving on soft tires, Hamilton was driving on a medium compound. First, on the 24th lap, Red Bull invited Pérez to change the wheel, and two laps later Verstappen followed, who returned to the track behind the two Mercedes, almost twenty seconds behind Hamilton.
On lap 30, seven-time world champion Hamilton was replaced, and when he returned, he was five seconds behind Verstappen, while Russell led the field. The latter led the field for five laps, but due to his fast-wearing tires, the Dutch driver kept approaching him, so he also drove into the pits on the 35th lap, and Verstappen found himself in the lead again.
The first half of the race did not hold any serious excitement, the best followed each other at a decent distance and there was little overtaking in the back of the field. In the continuation, the home favorite Pérez pressed the second Hamilton, who had problems with the hard tires, so not only could he not shake off the Mexican, but Verstappen also got further and further away from him.
The picture of the race did not change in the continuation either, Verstappen confidently drove in the lead, increasing his lead to over 10 seconds, while Pérez drove behind Hamilton for long laps with a one and a half second gap. The different tire strategies promised excitement, but Red Bull's medium tires did not slow down compared to the hard tires of the Mercedes even when turning to the "hair", and in fact, the difference between the first two places increased to close to 15 seconds by the last laps, and Verstappen finally won confidently and superiorly his 14th race this year.
The World Cup continues in Brazil in two weeks.
