Verstappen also took everything in Abu Dhabi

Max Verstappen, the Dutch Red Bull driver who already secured his second world championship title, won Sunday's Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the 22nd and last race of this year's world championship series.

Behind Verstappen, Charles Leclerc, the Ferrari driver from Monaco, finished in second place in Abu Dhabi, and the other Red Bull driver, Mexican Sergio Pérez, was able to take the bottom step of the podium.

Four-time World Cup winner Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin), running the last Formula 1 race of his career, finished 10th and scored points, while seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was eliminated due to a technical fault, so since his debut year in 2007 it was the first time he had not won a single race during the season.

At the start, Verstappen kept the leading position, Pérez ranked second behind him, and Leclerc third. Hamilton and Carlos Sainz Jr. (Ferrari) battled for fourth place for laps before George Russell (Mercedes) joined them and began to battle Sainz as Hamilton slowed and complained about his car on the team radio.

Pérez was the first to change tires on the 16th lap, and five laps later Verstappen got fresh tires, so Leclerc took the lead. The Monaco driver was soon also in the pits, so Verstappen took the lead again, followed by Pérez and then Leclerc. At that time, the fourth position belonged to Sainz, followed by the two Mercedes, Russell and Hamilton in that order.

In the continuation, Leclerc got closer and closer to the Red Bulls holding the first two places, so Pérez stopped for his second tire change on the 34th lap. After that, Ferrari asked Leclerc on the team radio if he could maintain his pace by not driving into the pits several times, to which the Monaco driver answered yes.

With fifteen laps to go, Verstappen was still in the lead, with Leclerc second and Hamilton third. Pérez was already fourth, followed by Sainz and Russell in fifth and sixth positions.

At the start of the heat, Pérez overtook and overtook Hamilton for third place at the second attempt, then followed Leclerc. The Mexicans then failed to catch up with their Monaco rival until the final whistle, who thus grabbed second place in the overall points race.

Valtteri Bottas (Alfa Romeo), who completed the 200th F1 race of his career, was 15th, while the Australian Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren), who will not be competing next year, was ninth.

Mick Schumacher - whom the fans will definitely not be able to see compete in F1 next year - finished the last race of the year in 16th place, and Nicholas Latifi (Williams), who also left the field, finished 19th.
