The 24-hour car race in Le Mans is postponed

The 24-hour car race in Le Mans will be postponed from June to August, organizers announced on Thursday as they hope spectators will be able to attend the venue at the new time.

The legendary battle last year was held behind closed gates in September over the coronavirus epidemic. This year’s competition will be on August 21-22 instead of the original June 12-13.

“While it was difficult to make that decision, it’s still the right one,” said Pierre Fillon, president of the organizing Automobile Club de l’Ouest. He added that it is considered inconceivable to hold the race behind closed gates for two consecutive years, especially as new race cars, called hypercars, will be unveiled at the race track this year.

“We will do everything we can to ensure that we can hold the competition in front of spectators in safe conditions, with all the necessary health measures in place,” Fillon said.

This is the 89th time that the 24 Hours of Le Mans will take place this year.
