F1 - Alonso replaces Vettel next year

Starting next season, Aston Martin's stable will be strengthened by two-time Formula 1 world champion Fernando Alonso.

The Spanish driver, who celebrated his 41st birthday at the Hungaroring last Friday, signed a multi-year agreement according to the team's announcement on Monday.

"I still have the hunger and the ambition to be at the forefront and I want to be a member of an organization that is committed to development and success," said Alonso, who is currently driving Alpine and finished eighth in the Mogyoród race on Sunday finished in 1st place, and tenth in the world championship points competition.

Alonso made his debut in Formula 1 21 years ago with Minardi, and in 2005 and 2006 he already won the world championship title as a driver for Renanult. He later played in the McLaren and Ferrari teams, he left the racing circus at the end of the 2018 season, he tried his hand at several other series, such as IndyCar - but he returned last year and became a driver for Alpine.

At Aston Martin, four-time world champion German Sebastian Vettel announced on Thursday that he will retire at the end of the season.
