Dakar Rally - Sainz had an accident and abandoned the race

After the start of the ninth stage, the Spanish duo of Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz had an accident on Tuesday at the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia, the four-time Dakar winner had to be taken to the hospital, so the Audi pair abandoned the race.

According to a statement from the organizers, at the fifth kilometer of the stage, the pair's racing car hit the ground with its nose behind a dune, overturned, and Sainz complained of chest pains, so he was taken to the Riyadh hospital by helicopter. The navigator escaped without serious injury.

At first, the 60-year-old Sainz wanted to wait for technical assistance and continue with the Dakar, but later decided against it because of his pain.

The two-time world rally champion Sainz, who won the Dakar last time in 2020, won the first stage this year and led the overall for two days, but after that he fell further and further behind for various reasons, and now he was no longer in the running for overall success.
