Mercedes Finnish competitor Valtteri Bottas won the seasonal Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix on Sunday in Melbourne, ahead of his teammate, defending British Lewis Hamilton. Behind the five-time world champion, Max Verstappen, Red Bull's Dutch pilot, became the third, the four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, and the Ferrari German driver fourth.
The 29-year-old Bottas, who was unable to win in the previous season, was the fourth winner of his career and his 31st podium.
Before the race, the teams and the spectators remembered a minute's mourning for Charlie Whiting, the World Champion of the World Championship, who died on Thursday in 66-year-old pulmonary embolism in Melbourne. Whiting came to the International Automobile Association in 1988 and since 1997 has been the Chief Competition Officer in Formula One.
Hamilton's first-place teammate was immediately ahead of the start. At the same time, the only Australian rider of the field, Daniel Ricciardo, was at a serious disadvantage because he was displaced from the asphalt strip and the first wing of the spoiler fell off, so he had to replace his nose with his Renault. Finally, in the 31st round, he had to give up the race.
Bottas' advantage over ten laps was more than three seconds ahead of Hamilton, and Vetta, who went third, ahead of six seconds.
Carlos Sainz Jr., McLaren's Spanish pilot, was the first to be eliminated, as his 11th car was on fire. In a few minutes, the wheel changes began, the defending champion in the 16th round, but his teammate waited, continued to increase the gap, and then he got new tires in the 24th round and made a significant profit against Hamilon, which he was able to gain in the jump.
In the 31st round, Verstappen overtaken Vette, for some time persecuted the defending champion, but when he spoiled a turn, he lost his chance of another overtaking.
In the last quarter of an hour, it was just the excitement that made the fastest lap, and who got the extra point under the new rules, and finally, Bottas succeeded.
Of the three newcomers to the season, the British Lando Norris (McLaren) was the 12th, Alexander Albon (Toro Rosso) from Thailand, 14th, and George Russell (Williams), also British, finished 16th. Polish Kubica, who returned to Poland in February 2011, ended up in the last 17th place, with three drawbacks, following a major ralibiless incident in February 2011.
The World Cup will continue in Bahrain in two weeks.
