Most Japanese don’t ask for the Olympics

The majority of Japanese believe that the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, which should be postponed to next year, should be canceled due to the coronavirus epidemic, according to a recent poll.

In a nationwide telephone survey, 32 percent of respondents said the two events should be canceled, and 31 percent were of the opinion that they should be postponed further. 27 percent of those surveyed said the competitions should be conducted as planned.

The study, conducted on December 11-13, involved 1,249 individuals over the age of 18.

In an October survey, even 40 percent of those surveyed said they would hold five-ring events in the summer of 2021, 23 percent were against it, and 25 percent responded by postponing the Olympics and Paralympics again.

The sporting events, originally scheduled for this summer, were postponed for a year in March due to the pandemic. The new date for the Olympics will be July 23-August 8, and the Paralympics will be held August 24-September 5.
