Zsombor Piros started the Wimbledon qualifiers with a lightning victory

Zsombor Piros reached the second round of the Wimbledon tennis championship qualifiers with his lightning victory.

The 178th player in the world ranking started for the second time in the qualification of the Grand Slam tournament in London, in 2017 he said goodbye in the first round - that was the last time he played a stakes match on grass. On Monday, the 10th seed Mats Moraing (123rd) was waiting for him, in their first meeting, Piros turned from 0:1 to 5:1 and took a set advantage in 20 minutes. The 30-year-old rival put up even less resistance in the continuation, and after 40 (!) minutes he was able to congratulate himself on the net.

"I surprised myself and quite a few other people with this result," he began his assessment on the social media page of the Hungarian association. - "I was very afraid of the grass court, because I haven't played on this surface for five years, and now I couldn't find the thread in the first training sessions. In addition, I faced a two-meter-high opponent who served giants, but I also served well. My coach, Sándor Noszály, and I worked out great tactics , which thankfully worked."

The 22-year-old Piros - the 2017 Australian Open junior champion - will face Brazilian Matheus Pucinelli de Almeida (227th) in the second round in Roehampton, where the Wimbledon qualifiers are traditionally held.

"If you can say that, then the next day after tomorrow, an advantageous opponent may follow, as he does not play fast and is more of a clay-court player. We train and move on," he added.

Another Hungarian interested in the men's qualification, Máté Valkusz, who barely made it onto the board as 259th, traveled to London on Sunday, where he will start against former top 200 Nicola Kuhn (246th) around 3:00 p.m. The German and Hungarian players already clashed at the 2018 challenger competition in Budapest, when Kuhn, who competed in Spanish colors between 2016 and 2021, won 6:2, 7:5.

In order to reach the main draw, you have to win three matches in the qualifiers. The draw for the women's qualification - in which Réka Jani and Tímea Babos are also interested - will be held on Monday (today).
