Italy’s Damiano Caruso brilliantly won the Vuelta’s ninth mountain run in the Espana, in which defending Slovenian Primoz Roglic retained its first place in the composite and even increased its lead.
After a second, a first and a third category ascent in the 188-kilometer run from Puerto Lumbreras, the climb of the high-profile Alto de Velefique awaited the field.
On the difficult section, Caruso was clearly the best, rarely seen the last 70 kilometers alone at the lead, and although his pursuers reduced their disadvantage on the last ascent, they reached the finish line with an advantage of more than a minute. The Italian athlete won his fourth stage victory in a big, three-week race.
Candidates for the complex championship title worked together for a long time, then four kilometers before the end, the Spanish Enric Mas attacked his rivals, and only Roglic could pick up the pace, so they progressed to the finish line and broke the others. In the final meters, Roglic then nodded Mast, who finished a second behind. Taken together, the Slovenian increased his lead over the Spaniard by 28 seconds.
Behind them, Jack Haig, Miguel Angel Lopez and Adam Yates arrived nearly 40 seconds behind, while this year’s Giro d’Italia winner Egan Bernal was more than a minute behind.

After a rest day on Monday, 189 kilometers between Roquetas de Mar and Rincón de la Victoria await the 76th Vuelta to the Espana field on Tuesday. The 3417-kilometer-long battle will end on 5 September in Santiago de Compostela, at the closing station of the famous St. James Pilgrimage, known as El Camino.
