US Open - Thiem defeated Anderson, with Nadal playing for the semi-finals

The world's top Rafael Nadal has reached the top eight, where last year's finalist Kevin Anderson, a farewell Austrian Dominik Thiem, will meet in the men's competition in the US Open Tennis Championships in New York.

The Spanish world star had a much tougher match than he expected with Georgia's Nikoloz Baszilasvili, who won the third set in short, and forced a nearly three and a half hour battle with Nadal triumphing in four games.

Ninth outspoken Austrian Thiem could have made unfavorable sign-ups for his fifth-placed Anderson bout, as hard-wrapped all six of their previous matches were won by South African rival. Thiem, however, was irresistible this time and won three sets, so he could win the quarterfinals for the first time at the US Open.

Results, 6th round:

men:

Nadal (Spanish, 1) - Baszilasvili (Georgian) 6: 3, 6: 3, 6: 7, 6: 4

Thiem (Austrian, 9th) - Anderson (South African, 5th) 7: 5, 6: 2, 7: 6 (7-2)

women:

K. Pliskova (Czech, 8th) - Barty (Australian, 18th) 6: 4, 6: 4

previously:

women's doubles:
