Tokyo 2020 - Bach: Canceling the Olympics would have been easier than postponing

Thomas Bach, chairman of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), said it would have been a simpler solution for the organization he led to cancel the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

"It would have been easier for the IOC to cancel the games on the grounds of force majeure, so we would have received the sum insured. But we are in the IOC to organize the five-ring games and not to cancel them," quoted German sports leader L 'Equipe has made a statement to the insidethegames.biz portal, which specializes in Olympic news and sports.

Thomas Bach added that the crisis caused by the pandemic has shown the need for greater solidarity in both sport and society.

“I hope that all this will lead to even better cooperation between international federations and organizers of major sporting events in the future,” he stressed.

The Tokyo Olympics would have originally started this month, but due to the epidemic, in an unprecedented way, in March, the organizers and the IOC decided to postpone the world’s biggest sporting event for a year. Recently, more and more athletes, sports leaders and virologists have expressed concern that the Olympics could not be held even next year without a vaccine. According to a poll, 77 percent of Japanese have a similar opinion.
