The Sports Oscars were awarded, with Hamilton, Messi and Biles the winners

For men, Lewis Hamilton and Lionel Messi shared, while for women, Simone Biles became Laureus Award winner of the 2019 Best Athlete.

For the first time, the vote was tied: the first British Formula One pilot to become world champion for the sixth time in the motor racing elite. The Argentinian football champion with his Spanish club FC Barcelona, while finishing third in the team in Copa America, earned his sixth Gold Ball and was named the Player of the Year by the International Federation (FIFA).

Winner of the Olympic Games, four-time Olympic champion American Simone Biles, last year's winner, won five gold medals at the Stuttgart World Cup, making her the 19th World Champion.

The team of the year became the rugby national team of the Republic of South Africa.

Based on the votes of more than 60 members of the sports academy, Dirk Nowitzki received a lifetime award for a former German basketball player.
