The chairman of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, says there is no need to talk about postponing the Olympics for the time being, and even asks everyone to refrain from vehement speculation about the organization of the summer games.
The chairman of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) told the New York Times about the situation following the coronavirus epidemic.
“We think in different scenarios, but unlike many sports federations or professional leagues, we are still four and a half months apart from the games,” Bach said.
He added that in many cases the unions seem more optimistic than the IOC, as they only postponed their competitions until April or May.
"And we're talking about the end of July." he declared.
In recent days, more and more athletes have criticized the IOC for sticking to the Olympics with the same conviction, despite the spread of the epidemic.
The IOC set up a working group in mid-February with representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Olympic Organizing Committee, the Japanese authorities and the Tokyo City Council.
The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics is July 24.
