Sándor Szalontay is the only one representing the Hungarian colors at the track cycling world championships starting on Wednesday in the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines velodrome in France.
The 32-year-old cyclist measures himself against the world's best in the sprint, in which he reached the quarter-finals at the European Multisport Championship in Munich in August and finished eighth. At the continental competition, Szalontay took part in both the 1-kilometer time trial and the keirin, finishing 10th in the former with a Hungarian record of 1:01.427 minutes, and 11th in the latter. In these two numbers, however, he did not qualify for the World Cup, as - according to the Hungarian Cycling Association (MKSZ) - none of his compatriots did.
Thus, the Hungarian national team jersey will be seen for the first time in the Saturday morning qualifying of the sprint at the World Cup, the venue of which will host the track cycling races of the Paris Olympics in two years. The auditorium next to the 250-meter track can accommodate five thousand people.
