Serena Williams is confident, but she doesn’t want to cringe at the 24th GS title

According to her coach Patrick Mouratoglou, although she really wants to win another big tournament, Serena Williams doesn’t need a record for an individual Grand Slam tournament win to be recognized as one of the best tennis players of all time.

The French specialist said on Monday that his student is still hungry for success and would love to collect his record-breaking 24th individual GS title, but if that fails, he’s still one of the best of all time.

"I don't think he needs any confirmation. Obviously he wants to win another big tournament, otherwise he wouldn't have come back, but at the same time he's not as obsessed with the twenty-fourths as much of the tennis world," Mouratoglou said.

Williams has lost four GS finals since the 2017 Australian Open, where he won the 23rd major tournament of his career, but the coach finds it difficult to compare his performance to that of Margaret Court, who collected 13 of his 24 titles before the pro era. .

“We all know we’re talking about two different eras, amateurs and professionals, but people are always preoccupied with breaking records,” Mouratoglou added.

The coach feels his apprentice is in great shape even at the age of 39, and he sees he hasn’t moved as well on the pitch for three years as he does in the current Australian Open.

“If your footwork isn’t good, there’s no Plan B, you can just attack, Serena has a couple of important matches to do,” the expert said. He added that Williams had suffered a lot of injuries in recent years, so he could not do the training he wanted, so there were problems with his condition.

The tenth-placed U.S. player in the quarter-finals will face second-ranked Romanian Simona Halepp, against whom she has a 9/2 victory score, but their last clash - in the 2019 Wimbledon final - was won by Halep.
