Rory McIlroy said the Ryder Cup should not be held

Rory McIlroy, the current top runner-up in the men’s golf world rankings, says a golf tournament is worthless without spectators, including the Ryder Cup. The patinated tournament hosting the competition between the European and US national teams loses its charm by excluding spectators, so it should rather be postponed to next year.

Rory McIlroy, a leader in the world golf rankings, is proposing to postpone the Ryder Cup rather than running without spectators.

“Without the thousands of spectators, this tournament is losing its charm, so I think it would be better to push it to 2021. And that’s what a European player in America is saying, ” 30-year-old McIlroy, who has won the Ryder Cup four times, told the British daily The Guardian.

The biennial team competition will feature the best of Europe and the United States, and this year’s venue will be Whistling Straits, Wisconsin. The 43rd Ryder Cup will in principle take place between September 25 and 27, with organizers currently considering a closed goalkeeper due to the coronavirus epidemic.

Earlier, four of this year’s four major golf tournaments were canceled, while the rest were postponed. Thus, the PGA Championship in San Francisco will begin on August 6, the US Open in New York on September 17, and the Masters in August will begin on November 12.
