Paris 2024 - Russian and Belarusian athletes may fail the Olympics

Russian and Belarusian athletes could be banned from the 2024 Paris Olympics in the wake of Russia's war in Ukraine, according to International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Craig Reedie.

"A decision will be made about what should happen to these two countries. I think the public opinion is that they should not qualify," said the former vice-president of the IOC to the British media.

As part of the anti-war sanctions, Russian and Belarusian athletes may be forced to skip the five-ring qualifying competitions, IOC President Thomas Bach said in May, but Russia's participation was not yet clear.

However, the IOC did not exonerate its Russian members and did not sanction the Russian Olympic Committee.

Among the sports included in the Olympic program, only cycling, tennis and chess allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete in neutral status, but Reedie doubts that they will be able to participate in the five-ring qualification events of these sports.
