Nominees for the six categories were unveiled on Wednesday, with the 2020 winners selected on the basis of votes from more than 60 members of the sports academy and awarded in May.
Athlete of the Year was awarded two men’s athletes, Joshua Cheptegei and Armand Duplantis, Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, star basketball player LeBron James, Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski and tennis player Rafael Nadal, while women cyclist Anna van der Breggen, skier Federica Brignone, athlete Brigid Kosgei, tennis player Osaka Naomi, footballer Wendie Renard and basketball player Breanna Stewart will be the winner of six.
Six entries are for the Breakthrough of the Year title: Dominic Thiem, the Austrian Open Open tennis player for Austria; Ansu Fati, a young footballer for FC Barcelona; Patrick Mahomes, Super Bowl winning manager for the Kansas City Chiefs American football team; Joan Mir, MotoGP World Motorcycle Champion; Tadej Pogacar, the Slovenian winner of the Tour de France cycling race and the Polish Iga Swiatek, the women's champion of Roland Garros.
