Giro d'Italia - Balatonfüred sprint belongs to Cavendish

Mark Cavendish won the sprint finish of the third - and last Hungarian - stage of the Giro d'Italia road cycling race in Balatonfüred, the Dutch Mathieu van der Poel remains in the lead in the overall. As the best Hungarian, Erik Fetter crossed the finish line in 41st place.

Starting from Kaposvár on Sunday, the field of 176 people had to complete 201 kilometers. The rain stopped before the start, so the cyclists could set off in dry weather, and three immediately left the field: the duo of Drone Hopper-Androni Giocattoli, who had been on the run for about 180 kilometers on Friday, Mattia Bais and Filippo Tagliani, this time was joined by Samuele Rivi (EOLO-Kometa ) joined. Their trio had an advantage of more than six minutes from the field, with such a difference that Van der Poel's team in the pink jersey, Alpecin-Fenix, took the lead.

Although it seemed several times that they could break the field, which had been flowing at a calm speed in the crosswind, in the end this did not happen. Along the roads, despite the weather being cooler than in recent days and promising rain, many people encouraged the cyclists.

In the lead, Tagliani broke away from his companions, the other two fugitives were overtaken by the already fast-paced field 28 kilometers before the finish line.

On the climb to Tihany, two of them moved away for the mountain points - the German Rick Zabel also took over the first place in the category from van der Poel - but they could not prevent the race of the field.

In the sprint, 36-year-old Mark Cavendish, who has already won 53 stages in the three-week competitions, proved to be the fastest, ahead of Valter Attila's French teammate, Arnaud Démare and Colombian Fernando Gaviria.

The leading group of the composite did not change, Van der Poel retained his first place as expected.

Among the Hungarians, Erik Fetter was 41st and Valter Attila 48th, but with the same time as the winner, while Barnabás Peák finished in 172nd place, 1:06 minutes behind.

Slovenian Jan Tratnik (Bahrain Victorious), participating in his sixth Grand Tour, was forced to abandon the race for the first time: the winner of the final stage of the 2015 Tour de Hongrie was injured in a fall on Friday, and did not finish the stage on Sunday.
