Giro d'Italia - Abruzzo province hosts the Grand Start

The province of Abruzzo will host the Grand Start of the Giro d'Italia road cycling race next year.

Three of the stages of the three-week Italian race were announced on Wednesday, revealing that the opening of the 106th Giro on May 6 will be an 18.4-kilometer individual time trial starting from Fossacesia Marina and ending with a slightly uphill finish in downtown Ortona. During the second stage, the field covers 204 kilometers from Teramo to San Salvo. The province of Abruzzo will host the Grande Partenza for the second time after 2001.

The route of the seventh stage was also announced, the stage ending in the province will be the first finisher above two thousand meters of the 2023 competition: after overcoming a distance of 218 kilometers and an elevation gain of about four thousand meters, it ends on the Gran Sasso d'Italia at an altitude of 2135 meters above sea level.

The first three stages of this year's Giro d'Italia, which ended with the overall success of the Australian Jai Hindley, were organized in Hungary, after the opening stage Budapest-Visegrád, the field completed a capital time trial and then the Kaposvár-Balatonfüred route.
