Australian Open - Thiem defeats world leader Nadal

The 26-year-old Austrian has won four games against the Spanish winner in 2009, bringing the first two sets in reverse.

In the fourth set, Thiem could have outsourced the match at 5-4, but made two mistakes, including a double, and Nadal, the 19-time Grand Slam winner, cut the game short. Here, Thiem reached two match balls, defeated by his Spanish rival, but with a lucky win for the Austrian, he scored a third chance and Nadal hit the next point, ending the match after 4 hours 10 minutes.

Thiem defeated Nadal for the first time in the Grand Slam Tournament. After Thomas Muster, the second Austrian tennis player, ranked four in Melbourne, succeeded his compatriot in 1989 and 1997. His opponent for the finals will be German Alexander Zverev.

Results, quarter final:

men:

Thiem (Austrian, 5th) - Nadal (Spanish, 1st) 7: 6 (7-3), 7: 6 (7-4), 4: 6, 7: 6 (8-6)

previously:
