Daniel Sturridge, a former FC Liverpool player who is currently without a club, has been banned from all football-related activities until 17 June for violating betting rules.
The player was suspected last year of leaking information about his possible move to Seville in January 2018 to his family members and close friends, who used that information when making sports bets. The English federation (FA) banned it for six weeks in mid-July, but the sentence - which was accompanied by a £ 75,000 fine - was suspended for four weeks.
The indictment alleges that the attacking player violated the rules in 11 cases, but the requested independent committee found nine of them unfounded. The FA had already indicated at that time that it did not agree with the committee's findings and appealed. As a result, a worldwide ban was imposed on Monday until mid-June - and it was fined an additional £ 75,000 - as an independent body found two more charges to be well-founded. At the same time, clubs were warned not to apply Sturridge until the ban expired.
The football player said he will continue to fight to ensure that professional players are free to talk to their family members and close friends without having to fear sanctions. He stressed that the Appellate Body also acknowledged that no one had responded using the information it had received.
Sturridge left Liverpool last summer and on Monday terminated his contract with the Turkish Trabzonspor team until the summer of 2022 by mutual agreement.
The offensive player began his professional career in Manchester City in 2006, then moved to Chelsea three years later, and in 2013 to Liverpool. With the London team, he won the Premier League, the FA Cup - twice - and the Champions League. He also triumphed with Liverpool in the BL last year.
