Lewandowski could be the Best of the Year award

The name of Robert Lewandowski, the Polish national team that tripled with Bayern Munich last season, is also on the shortlist of 11 who will be the winner of the Best of the Year award at the International Football Association (FIFA) virtual gala.

FIFA released the names of the remaining candidates on Wednesday, in the Champions League as well as in the German Bundesliga, along with goal scorer Lewandowski, the list also includes Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus) and Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona). For women, Marozsa Jennifer is also competing for recognition.

Lewandowski also had a great chance at this year’s Golden Ball, but this isn’t being awarded for the first time in the 64-year history of recognition because of the coronavirus epidemic.

The list of 11 footballers includes Thiago Alcantara, Kylian Mbappé and Neymar (both PSG) transferred from Bayern Munich to Liverpool, as well as the English champion FC Liverpool trio, Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané. Kevin de Bruyne (Manchester City) and Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid) also fit into the shortlist.

The awards ceremony will take place virtually on December 17, with nominees voting until December 9.

According to an earlier FIFA announcement, as in last year, awards will be presented in nine individual categories in 2020, plus a team of the year will be announced for both men and women.

The male and female player of the year invariably sum up four types of votes in the election: in addition to the federal captains and team captains of the national team, the opinions of more than two hundred journalists and the online votes of the fans are also taken into account.

Last year, Messi became the player of the year, while Dániel Zsóri received the Puskás Award for the goal of the year.
