Fradi can already secure the spring continuation in Belgrade

Ferencváros enters the field on Thursday as a guest of Crvena zvezda in the third round of the Europa League group stage with the knowledge that, with victory, it will practically secure its continuation in the spring.

Mathematically, it cannot yet be decided that the Hungarian champions will finish in the top two in the group, but they cannot finish further back than third place, which guarantees a continuation in the Conference League, if they maintain their 100% record in Belgrade, while in the other match of the four, the Turkish Trabzonspor and the French AS Monaco are playing a draw. The last time a Hungarian team participated in a European cup series was in 2004, when VSC Debrecen reached the third round of the UEFA Cup, the legal predecessor of the Europa League.

Winning the game promises to be extremely difficult, even though the leading green and whites will visit Crvena zvezda without a point after two bravura successes - beating Trabzonsport 3-2 and AS Monaco 1-0. The Belgrade team is on the one hand in great form, unbeaten at the top of the list after 11 rounds in the Serbian league, and on the other hand, its international routine is also significant, considering that it has appeared in the group stage of the Champions League or the Europa League for the sixth time in a row, and this year it also reached the eighth finals in the latter.

For Ferencváros, which is on the main table for the fourth consecutive season, it may also be a warning sign that it unexpectedly lost in the OTP Bank League on Sunday, as a guest of the newcomer Kecskemét. In the meeting, especially in the first half, the team of head coach Stanislav Cherchesov played dull football, which could not overcome its two-goal deficit in the second half, but did not even manage to make up for it.

During the long history of the two teams, they only clashed twice: in 1975, the Hungarians advanced from the KEK semi-finals with a 4-3 aggregate score.
