The International Football Association (FIFA) has been tightening rules on player lending from the summer.
Among other things, this type of contract will be for at least one year and will maximize the number of players a club can give or borrow. From next season, that number will be eight, then seven in the 2023-24 season and only six a year later. The rule does not apply to players under the age of 21 and self-educated players.
It will also be forbidden to pass on the borrowed football to a third association.
FIFA said Thursday that the new regulations will take effect on July 1, before being reviewed by the executive committee.
With the tightening, the world federation wants to get young footballers to develop better and have a better “professional balance”, and it wants to prevent some clubs from employing a lot of loan players.
Most of Europe's leading clubs prefer to lend, with Champions League champion Chelsea, for example, currently has 21 players on other teams.
