After several decades of waiting, Eintracht Frankfurt and Glasgow Rangers are aiming for their first major international triumph in Wednesday's final of the Europa League.
The German team won the UEFA Cup in 1980, which can be considered the predecessor of the series, while the Scottish team won the KEK just fifty years ago, but since then neither side has been able to achieve resounding success. The increased anticipation of the fans is shown by the fact that both clubs could have sold up to 100,000 tickets for the meeting, and although only slightly more than 42,000 spectators can watch the match at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium in Seville, according to the news, 70,000 Scottish and 50,000 German drivers arrive in the Andalusian city. By the way, the two clubs received 10,000 tickets each.
The stakes of the meeting are only increased by the fact that the winner can appear on the main table of the Champions League next season. This could be especially important for Frankfurt after they finished 11th in the Bundesliga, meaning that if they fall short in the final, they will be out of the international stage for a year. Rangers could miss the CL qualifiers as the Scottish runners-up if they win.
"For Eintracht, the fans, the club and the players, winning an international trophy again after 42 years is the most important thing ever," said Frankfurt head coach Oliver Glasner. "The match is extremely important, so we will do everything we can to return home with the trophy and then celebrate with our fans for a night or two".
"There is already an incredible energy in the team. We can't wait for the game, we are one win away from making history," said Aaron Ramsey, Rangers' Welsh midfielder. "Obviously it's very difficult to get to this stage, you need a bit of luck, but some of our performances have been fantastic. It doesn't surprise me what we've achieved".
In relation to Rangers' performance so far, Ramsey indicated that although they lost seven times during the campaign, they saw off rivals who were considered more likely than two other German teams, Borussia Dortmund, who are both ranked higher than Frankfurt, and the three Hungarian national team players - Péter Gulácsi, RB Leipzig, which also employs Willi Orbán and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Accordingly, Glasner spoke with great respect about the Scottish rivals, who, in his opinion, showed that they are an excellent team and well prepared for the representatives of German football. However, Frankfurt can look forward to the final with the same confidence as its opponent, as it also fought its way to the final on a difficult path and was also undefeated. In addition to Real Betis and West Ham United, for example, Barcelona, which was considered a big favorite after its elimination from the BL, was eliminated.
"I expect a very balanced, competitive match," said the Frankfurt coach.
His colleague, Giovanni van Bronckhorst, who was appointed Rangers manager in November after Steven Gerrard left for Aston Villa, spoke primarily about how his players' attitude in the knockout stages was exemplary. According to him, his team has the right quality to win the final, he called the most important thing that they have the belief to win.
The final of the Europa League starts on Wednesday at 21:00 at the whistle of the Slovenian Slavko Vincic. The match will be broadcast live by M4 Sport.
