The capital’s top association in the Spanish football league indicated in a statement on Tuesday that Diego Costa had asked him to leave the team immediately a few days ago for personal reasons.
Costa’s 32-year contract was still in effect until next June, but the agreement has now been terminated by agreement between the parties.
“We spent a lot of time together, he gave us a lot, but we also tried to give him a lot,” said Diego Simeone, head coach at Atlético Madrid. He added that the personal reasons for his departure had been discussed with Costa, and the club wanted to help him in a way that did not harm the football player’s individual interests.
“He felt the need to find a new challenge and I am sure that wherever he continues, he will perform well because he is a real fighter,” Simeone declared.
Diego Costa won a Spanish championship title with Atlético in 2014, but coached Chelsea that year. The Spanish national team striker returned to the Madrid team in 2018, but due to his injuries, he was no longer able to be as successful as in his previous athletics period. Since his return, Costa has been a member of the starting lineup in 43 league games, scoring 12 goals and helping Atlético win two trophies, the 2018 Europa League and the European Super Cup.
