The North American Baseball League (MLB) leadership has been severely punished, including a one-year ban on two of its leaders, by the Houston Astros.
According to an MLB announcement Monday, the league's investigation found that the Astros had been cheated to win the 2017 championship title by recording video footage of their opponents during matches and passing them on to rackets, thereby gaining undue advantage.
As a result, general manager Jeff Luhnow and head coach AJ Hinch were both banned for one year. In addition, the league has deprived Houston of first and second round options in the 2020 and 2021 amateur draft exchanges, which will have to pay $ 5 million - the highest fine currently imposed - to the MLB box office.
The Astros cooperated with the League throughout the investigation, interviewing 60 witnesses and reading over 70,000 emails.
Shortly after the MLB announcement, Houston co-chairman Jim Crane held a press conference announcing the dismissal of Luhnow and Hinch.
