According to a recent poll, almost half of Germany’s population is opposed to the Olympics taking place in Tokyo this year.
At the request of the German news agency dpa, the YouGov poll conducted a survey that found 48 percent of German people considered it wrong for Japan and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to want to hold five-ring games in Tokyo despite the coronavirus epidemic.
Thirty-three percent of those surveyed believed the Olympics could be held in July and August, while 19 percent were unsure about the issue.
The games would have originally been held in the Japanese capital last summer, but after the pandemic broke out, Japan and the IOC decided to postpone the event for a year. However, the coronavirus epidemic continues to pose a health threat in many countries, so the Japanese have already decided not to allow foreign viewers into the games.
The Olympic torch relay is scheduled to start on Thursday from Fukushima, spectators will not be able to attend the ceremony. In principle, all 47 prefectures of Japan will be affected by the torch relay before the five-ringed flame arrives at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium.
The opening is scheduled for July 23, the Olympics run through August 8, and the Paralympics take place between August 24 and September 5.
